So maybe it’s not such an irrational statement to claim that some college athletes are professionals. The time commitments, revenues, and physical risks that millions of other student athletes play with can all be comparable to those found on a professional level. However, there are just as many athletes who do not play with these similarities. Obviously not all student athletes qualify as professionals, but if they do, why can’t we pay them? I believe that student athletes should be monetarily compensated for their work. However, these student athletes must fit into specific categories regarding revenues, time commitments, and injury risks. And because these criteria are clear-cut statistics, it should be relatively easy to divide student athletes into professional and amateur categories.
